Millions stroll in New York’s ‘park in the sky’ – October 2011

One of the runaway hits of this past summer in New York has not been on Broadway – instead it has been at a most unusual park which is attracting millions of visitors from all around the world.

The disused elevated railway track that runs through downtown Manhattan now offers commuters and tourists alike a peaceful escape from the chaos on the busy city streets below.

The inside story of New York City’s so-called “park in the sky” is about to be told in a book called High Line.

Michael Maher took a stroll through the park to find out more.

BBC – “9/11 stories” – September 2011

Ten years after the attacks of 11 September 2001, Brian Clark and Stanley Praimnath reflect on the momentous events that changed their lives forever.

There were only a handful of survivors above the point at which the Al-Qaeda piloted planes hit the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

This is the remarkable story of Brian Clark and Stanley Praimnath, who escaped together from the South Tower.

Veteran crossword puzzle creator Maura Jacobson has worked for New York magazine for decades and has legions of devoted fans.

Her love for the puzzles began as a young girl, following her father’s love for crosswords.

She explained how she became a crossword creator.

BBC Breakfast News – “New York’s new ripple-style skyscraper” – May 2011

The Manhattan skyline is changing, with the completion of an acclaimed “rippled” skyscraper designed by Frank Gehry.

Meanwhile at Ground Zero a tower is rising from the site of the 9/11 attacks.

Laura Trevelyan reports from New York.

Customers who are fussy with their food and like ordering off-menu might need to avoid a trip to New York.
In the city where the customer is always right, there are now restaurants which are daring to say no to those who are particular about their food.

Elisane Silva, the 6.6 tall girl from Brazil wants to be a model. She flies from Belem, North of the country, to Sao Paulo, SE of Brazil, to visit a model agency.

BBC World New America: “The Latino Obama from Texas” – Nov. 2010

San Antonio has become the epicenter of the integrated Latino community in America and at its center is Mayor Julian Castro. His approach to voting, elections and getting involved at a very young age has already got some people making comparisons to another virtual unknown local politician who rose all the way to the White House.

BBC World News America: “Cambodian rappers fight urban blight” – August 2010

In Philadelphia, the band AZI Fellas is truly making their voice heard. The group is composed of Cambodian migrants and their raps bring to life the struggles of their community.
Michael Maher has travelled to meet the musicians and hear their message.

BBC World News America: “Iraq war veterans benefit from Warrior Games therapy” – May 2010

The first ever US Armed Forces Warrior Games has taken place in Colorado. It aims to help war veterans like Sergeant Nathan Haddad, who served in Iraq.

BBC World News America: “Rushdie promotes dialogue between US and the world” – April 2010

Salman Rushdie has described America’s discourse with the rest of the world as “a dialogue of the deaf.” So in an effort to address the void, Rushdie founded a major literary festival. Run by PEN, the international body charged with protecting writers, the festival brings together more than a hundred authors from around the world.
Michael Maher caught up with the Indian-born novelist whose own life is a testament to what can happen when dialogue breaks down.

In New York the jazz epicentre revolves around the legendary Vanguard village club. Michael Maher has gone to see how the club and its owner, Lorraine Gordon, have carved out their place in music history.
